If you are not familiar with the term “social media,” you NEED to learn about it as a promotional tool. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google+ and others all fall into this category, and you almost can’t get through a day without feeling the effects of social media on your life in some form.
The real question is how can you use it to help market your work? The easy answer is just do something with it, use it, get your name out on it, etc., but a strategic plan with a purpose will be much more effective and successful.
As many artists, galleries and show organizers have recently realized, things are changing in the art world, specifically from an artist’s point of view. The way in which you can, and should promote yourself is changing and there are now many more ways that you can do this. Social media is fast becoming a useful tool in marketing and promotion, but how to use it effectively is still a big question for many artists.
Whether you have just started creating art or are a seasoned professional, one thing is most likely always on your mind. How can I protect my work? With digital and mixed media creations now becoming a more accepted form of artwork, the sad truth is that there are many artists who use other people’s work without their knowledge or permission. In many cases a photographer, artist or other creator is willing to allow their creation to be reworked into something new, but they simply want to be asked first and given appropriate credit of course.
